Nakheel Property

Dubai is the fastest growing city in the world, and Nakheel is a key player in realising the vision of the city for the 21st century: creating a world class destination for business and tourism.

The city's premier property development company, Nakheel is behind a variety of landmark developments. Its goal is to redefine the concept of property development across all sectors – residential, tourist, commercial and retail – by fashioning unique and genuine solutions, created after extensive research and planning. Each development is united by a commitment to quality, innovation and attention to detail.

The roots of Nakheel can be traced to the late 1990s when H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and UAE Vice President, set out his vision to make Dubai one of the leading tourist destinations in the world. Wisely he recognized that in addition to the region’s sunny climate, one of Dubai’s most attractive features was its pristine beaches besides the clear blue waters of the Arabian Gulf; however this was limited to 70km. Thus the idea of The Palm was born – the perfect icon for maximizing beachfront. The Palm shape also pays homage to one of Dubai's most important symbols: with the palm tree – known as 'the bride of the orchard' - and water the region's most important sources of food, shelter and trade.

After several years of feasibility studies The Palm was launched in 2001 and reclamation began that year. At that stage The Palm was its own separate company. However, with the launch of the second Palm (Jebel Ali), it was clear the The Palm as a company needed to expand, and so Nakheel (literally meaning "The Palms") was born in 2003: a key player in building Sheikh Mohammad's vision of Dubai.

Nakheel's portfolio now currently extends to 15 projects: from iconic landmarks that will go down in history for their unprecedented magnitude and grandeur to dream-like residencies that redefine community living. Each development is united by a commitment to quality, innovation and attention to detail.

Such ambition is perfectly embodied by Nakheel's signature development, The Palm. It involves the creation of the world's largest three man-made islands known as The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali, and The Palm Deira. Each will feature a variety of stunning villas, townhouses, luxury hotels, and leisure facilities.

The first Palm to be finished will be The Palm, Jumeirah. Reclamation is complete, and highlights of The Palm include a 500,000 sq metre Atlantis waterpark themed hotel at the head of the Crescent, and 1,500 beachside villas and 2,200 shoreline apartments offering luxury beachfront living. Furthermore, as part of an exclusive partnership between The Trump Organization and Nakheel, The Palm Jumeirah will feature a number of Trump properties, including the The Trump Hotel and Tower Palm Jumeirah; a 800 unit condo-hotel at the centre of The Palm’s trunk.

With The Palm having placed Dubai firmly on the world map, Nakheel decided to take the next step and put the world map on Dubai. Nakheel's iconic development – The World – consists of a series of 300 man-made islands, positioned strategically to form the planet's most visually stunning development: the shape of the world map on the sea.

Nakheel projects are consistently innovative. Who else but Nakheel would contemplate moving some 3 million cubic meters of seawater in a dynamic water-flow motion form the sea with underground pipes to create a beautiful inland residential development? August 2005 saw Jumeirah Islands first residents move into the world's first man-made inland island community. The development is made of 50 islands with luxury villas.

Nearby Jumeirah Lake Towers is similarly ambitions; set amidst man-made lakes and landscaped grounds, the 79 towers will be a mix of ultra-modern residential and commercial developments.

Officially launched at Cityscape 2005, Jumeirah Golf Estates will create four of the best residential courses in the world, including two courses designed by the legendary Greg Norman. Completing the Jumeirah portfolio of brands, Jumeirah Village, inspired by a rural setting, consists of more than 7,000 villas and townhouses, and is designed in a classic Arabic Mediterranean architectural style.

April 2005 saw the grand opening of Ibn Battuta Mall. With 300 shops and a 21 screen cinema featuring an IMAX, the Middle East's largest themed mall has six different shopping zones with stunning interiors inspired by the travels of the legendary Arab explorer Ibn Battuta. It has introduced more than 50 new brands to the UAE, and has received millions of visitors in its first year.

The International City development will feature ten internationally themed residential districts accommodating 70 – 80,000 residents, as well as serving as a world-class hub for international investors, traders and retailers. Recently opened, Dragon Mart offers the largest selection of Chinese products and services outside China, while the Dubai Design Centre, spread over an area of 12 million square feet, will be an exclusive development for traders and retailers offering a complete range of home furnishing and constructions solutions.

Inspired by the success of The Gardens, a family orientated residential community completed in 2003, the Discovery Gardens is a 2.4 million square metre development of six themed communities inspired by garden living. The Lost City will represent a similarly attractive residential district with architecture inspired by the ancient civilisations.

Located 35km south west of Dubai, sheltering The Palm, Jebel Ali, Dubai Waterfront was launched in January 2005 – the largest waterfront development in the world, it will be a balanced mix of residential, retail, commercial and industrial offerings across 81 million square metres of beachfront destination. The first phase of the development is Madinat Al Arab. Set to be the downtown and central business district of Dubai Waterfront, it will be anchored by Al Burj, one of the world's tallest buildings. The first phase (approximately 30%) of Madinat Al Arab went on sale to developers in July 2005, and sold out for AED 13 billion in five days. When complete, Dubai Waterfront will be a city in itself providing homes for more than 500,000 residents.

February 2006 saw the launch of Nakheel Hotels & Resorts, a new hotel and resort investment company. Nakheel Hotels & Resorts will not only see the development of hotels in the UAE, such as The Trump Hotel & Tower Palm Jumeirah, but also the development and acquirement of hotels and resorts internationally, commencing in Russia, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Nakheel currently has US$30 billion worth of projects under development; when complete the developments will have added 1500km of waterfront to Dubai.
